2009 Marine Birthday RecapOver 80 pictures of the 2009 Marine Corps Birthday Party held at the Marine Corps League, Pvt Charles J Shutt Detachment has been uploaded to the website photo gallery. A great event attended by local Marines of the Boston and surrounding areas. Some out of State visitors made the journey to attend this once a year event that was wall to wall in Marines, members and special guests. Photos of the Marine Birthday Party: http://shuttdetachment.org/shuttpics/thumbnails.php?album=22Attire was more casual this year as the Pvt Shutt Detachment was just coming off their formal dress event of the 50th Year Gala, commemorating the 50 years of being a Marine Corps League detachment in 2009. In attendance were National Marine Corps League Commandant Jim Laskey, his bio can be read here http://www.mcleague.com/mdp/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=73 ,past Dept of Massachusetts Commandant and a current Shutt Detachment trustee, Joe Caterina and Marine Corp League Foundation member and Shutt Detachment Charter Member Paul T. O'Reilly. Paul's signature is on the original document establishing the Pvt Charles Shutt Detachment as a Marine Corps League Detachment in 1959. Local Veterans representative of Watertown, MA, Bob Erickson made the evening to celebrate the occasion. Marine Veteran, Steve Cho of http://www.greenjobs4vets.us/ and a Shutt Detachment member was on hand to enjoy the celebration and answer questions about the program which helps Veterans join the green industries. One of the surprises of the evening was the swearing in of two new members by National Commandant Jim Laskey. Though the guide book on hand was a bit smaller than the National Commandant was used to, the new members were honored by this impromptu ceremony and the round of applause by the all present. Many a new face attended the Marine Birthday Party this year. In part by the exposure that came from the 50th Year Gala held at the Commodore's Mansion in Watertown, MA. http://shuttdetachment.org/shuttpics/thumbnails.php?album=21 Along with the new faces many a long forgotten face came out of the woodwork this year to celebrate with their brother and sister Marines.Dave Guido once again took up the challenge as being the oldest Marine on hand to cut the Birthday cake and new Shutt Detachment Marine attendee, Alex, served as our youngest Marine. The cake was not only beautifully decorated it tasted as good as it looked. Our important $5,000.00 dollar drawing was won by the surprise threesome of Mike, Dave and Olivia. For all they put put into the detachment it was good too see them take the prize, which is picked from the middle 2 numbers of the daily numbers drawn on the day. Only 100 tickets are available and this has been very fair way of picking the winner(s). The evening did wind up with the Marine Corps Hymn being sang around the watering hole and a few rounds of cheer being drank by the Marines who always find a way to be last on hand before closing time. The 2009 Marine Corps Birthday at the Pvt Charles J Shutt Detachment was an outstanding event due to the work of members, Detachment officers and never forget our OD, Marine Ed Mahan whose tireless attention to the Club's facilities and event planning has made the Pvt Charles J Shutt Detachment one of the best locations for Marine and Patriotic related events in the Boston area.
